At the
beginning of last February, my husband and I decided to have some vacations out
of our country, since we've been working non-stop for almost 2 years. We plan
our trip to New York in less than a week we bought our plane tickets and hotel
reservations. The last time my husband was there was before 9/11 so everything
was gonna be new for him as well.
Living in the Caribbean almost my entire life, you can imagine that cold
weather and I don't get along too well. When we arrived at the JFK we took the
Long Island Rail Road to get to our hotel that was on Times Square. Let me tell
you that while we were waiting for the train, I thought to myself: "What
the hell am I doing here in this freezing weather?" Seriously, I should
have gone like in late March. At least that's what I thought that day, but did
not complain because my husband was giving us this trip as an early celebration
for my birthday. I decided not to be a cry baby, put my gloves on, scarf on and
2 coats, and got ready for our vacation.
I was so happy when we arrived to Penn Station. I was in awe with the tall
buildings and the diversity of people, and the weather wasn't so bad when you
are carrying your luggage through the streets trying to be careful and not hurt
someone, because let me tell my friends, I am really clumsy.
After we checked in and left our luggage in the room, but decided to walk and
grab some lunch. The first thing that we saw was Times Square, which was pretty
impressive and cool, to tell the truth. I love all the energy that has this
place. After walking and walking, we went to Grand Central. I was like
woooooww. I don't know why but I've always been fascinated by it. With it's
restaurant and all the passages, I just loved it.
The next day we went to Central Park. It was all covered in snow and it was
beautiful. I hadn't seen actual snow before and I was like a kid, happy happy.
In the night we went to see this show called STOMP. Since I was little I've
heard of it and I've dying to go, and I was not disappointed. It was pretty
awesome.
We bought a NY pass, which was the best decision ever. Seriously, if you plan
ahead, you can visit a bunch of places and save big bucks. We bought a 3day
pass and went to Empire State, Top of The Rock, Tour on Rockefeller buildings,
Madame Tussaud's, Water Taxi, MoMA, the MET, Guggenheim Museum, National
History Museum, a tour on the Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium and Circle Line Sightseeing Cruises. Believe me when I say it's a big save. I also didn't know I could walk that much! Like there were parts of my foot that were hurting that I didn't know could hurt! But honestly, totally worth it! :)
After that, we had to go shopping, 'cause seriously, a trip is not complete for us girls until you go shopping :P I must point out that you must go to Brooklyn to do some extra shopping becayse things are cheaper there. I went to a mall just in front of the Brooklyn Nets Stadium. There's also a Marshall's where you can buy good stuff but at a better price. Before that, we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, which was pretty impressive, even though my soul was freezing from the freaking breeze.
The last activity was going to see a NBA game on the Madison Square Garden. It was awesome! Note: if you wanna have a beer, you must take your passport with you. My husband and I always showed our driver's license in some restaurants and bars where we ordered beer but that not gonna work there. We had to watch the game without our precious beer :(
I must say that one of the things that I loved about this city is walking and walking. In my country you don't get to do that because of the melting sun. I also loved the diversity of foods and people, and just feeling like there's a piece of every country is this city. I'll definitely come back soon!
Laters!
Jessie :)
